Reviews for A Different Place:
"A compelling character journey told with striking efficiency and depth. Confident, sensitive filmmaking from a director who clearly knows that they want to say."
(Prano Bailey-Bond)
"Director Sophie Black trusts the performances of her cast, leading to a thoughtful and powerful picture... Sophie Black has a rare consistency, regardless of the genre she is working in."
(Matthew Tilt, Midlands Movies)
LGBT short drama film; a tender portrait of a middle-aged woman who decides to explore her true sexuality by meeting with another woman in a hotel one night. As director, Sophie instigated a substantial rehearsal process - collaborating with an Intimacy Coordinator - in order to draw out natural, emotive performances from the actors within a safe space.
The project was funded by BFI NETWORK (through the National Lottery) and screened at VIFF, Norwich Film Festival, BFI Flare, Flatpack Film Festival, KASHISH Mumbai, and This Is England, among others. This film earned Sophie a 'Best Director' nomination at the Midlands Movies Awards 2023.
The film has had over 180,000 views (so far) on YouTube alone.
